Land Of Cones

Land of Cones is a photographic project exploring the omnipresence of traffic cones in Japan. What began with an amused observation quickly evolved into a more critical reflection on the excessive use of these objects and the environmental issues they raise.

The idea for this project emerged during a discussion with fellow photographers, who were frustrated by the constant presence of these cones in their frames, often spoiling the aesthetic of the locations. Taking a counter-approach, I chose to integrate them into my images, as a form of visual play and ironic commentary.

However, what initially started as humor soon took on another dimension. The more I photographed them, the more I realized the sheer scale of their presence: in streets, of course, but also in unexpected places like forests, beaches, and mountains. Abandoned and damaged, they slowly degrade, becoming a silent, lasting form of pollution.

Land of Cones maintains a playful approach, but it highlights a very real absurdity: that of a disproportionate, almost compulsive, use of an object that shouldn't be. Through this project, I invite viewers to question the impact of overconsumption and our indifference to these objects that we no longer see, precisely because they are everywhere.

Land Of Cones est un projet photographique qui explore l’omniprésence des cônes de signalisation au Japon. Ce travail, initié sur un ton amusé, a rapidement évolué vers une réflexion plus critique sur l’usage excessif de ces objets et les problématiques environnementales qu’ils soulèvent.

L’idée a germé lors d’une discussion avec des amis photographes, frustrés de voir ces cônes omniprésents dans leurs cadres, gâchant souvent l’esthétique des lieux. À contre-pied, j’ai choisi de les intégrer dans mes images, comme une forme de jeu visuel et de commentaire ironique.

Mais, ce qui au départ relevait de l’humour, a rapidement pris une autre dimension. Plus je les photographiais, plus je réalisais l’ampleur de leur présence : dans les rues, bien sûr, mais aussi dans des lieux inattendus — forêts, plages, montagnes. Abandonnés, endommagés, ils se dégradent lentement, devenant une forme de pollution silencieuse et durable.

Land Of Cones conserve une approche ludique, mais il met en lumière une absurdité bien réelle : celle d’un usage disproportionné, presque compulsif, d’un objet qui ne devrait pas l’être . À travers ce projet, j’invite à s’interroger sur l'impact de la surconsommation et de l'indifférence face à ces objets que l’on ne voit plus; justement parce qu’ils sont partout.

Land Of Cones は、日本における交通コーンの遍在を探求する写真プロジェクトです。

最初は面白がって観察することから始まりましたが、これらの物の過剰な使用とそれが引き起こす環境問題に対するより批判的な考察へとすぐに発展しました。

このプロジェクトのアイデアは、写真家の友人たちとの議論から生まれました。

彼らは常にフレームの中にコーンが存在ししばしばその場所の美観を損なうことに不満を抱いていました。

私はその逆のアプローチをとり視覚的な遊びと皮肉なコメントの形としてコーンを自分の写真に組み込むことを選びました。

しかし、当初はユーモアとして始まったものがやがて別の側面を帯びるようになりました。

コーンを撮影すればするほど、その存在の膨大さに気づかされました。

もちろん街中だけでなく、森、ビーチ、山といった予期せぬ場所にもそれらはありました。

放置され損傷したコーンはゆっくりと劣化し静かにしかし着々と不規則に形を変えて汚染源となっています。

Land Of Cones は遊び心のあるアプローチを保ちつつも、非常に現実的な不条理さを浮き彫りにしています。それは本来そうあるべきではない物の、不均衡でほとんど強迫的な使用です。

このプロジェクトを通して、私は見る人に過剰消費の影響とどこにでもありすぎるためにもはや目に入らなくなってしまったこれらの物に対する私たちの無関心について問いかけるよう促します。
